Moses
Leader of the Exodus
Moses is arguably the most significant figure in the Old Testament, and honestly, his life reads like an epic movie. He was born during a time when Pharaoh had ordered all Hebrew baby boys to be killed. His mother hid him in a basket on the Nile River, where he was found and adopted by Pharaoh's own daughter. So Moses grew up as Egyptian royalty while being secretly nursed by his own biological mother. Wild, right?
Things took a dramatic turn when Moses killed an Egyptian he saw beating a Hebrew slave. He fled to the wilderness of Midian, where he spent about 40 years as a shepherd. That's where God appeared to him in a burning bush and told him to go back to Egypt and demand that Pharaoh release the Israelites. Moses was genuinely terrified and tried to talk God out of it, saying he wasn't a good speaker. God eventually let his brother Aaron help, but Moses was clearly the one in charge.
What followed was one of the most famous showdowns in history. Pharaoh refused to let the people go, so God sent ten plagues on Egypt — from turning the Nile to blood to the death of every firstborn son. After the final plague, Pharaoh relented, and Moses led roughly two million people out of Egypt, famously parting the Red Sea when they were trapped.
But the journey didn't end there. Moses spent 40 years leading these people through the desert, which was honestly exhausting. They complained constantly — about food, water, leadership, everything. Moses served as their judge, lawgiver, and intermediary with God. He received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, and those laws became the foundation of Israelite religion and society.
One of the most heartbreaking parts of Moses' story is that he never actually entered the Promised Land. He struck a rock in anger when God told him to speak to it, and that act of disobedience cost him his goal. He died on Mount Nebo, looking out over the land he'd spent his entire adult life trying to reach. Despite that, the Bible says God buried Moses himself, and no one has ever found his grave.
