Peter
The Rock
Peter is one of the most relatable people in the Bible, mostly because he's so thoroughly human. He was a fisherman from Bethsaida, working on the Sea of Galilee with his brother Andrew when Jesus called them to follow him and become "fishers of men." Peter dropped everything and went. That impulsive, all-in quality defined him for better and worse.
Jesus gave him the name Peter (Petros in Greek, Cephas in Aramaic), meaning "rock." It was both a prophecy and, at times, deeply ironic. Peter was the first disciple to declare that Jesus was the Messiah — and then, just minutes later, Jesus called him "Satan" for trying to talk him out of going to the cross. He walked on water toward Jesus and then sank when he got scared. He swore he'd never abandon Jesus and then denied knowing him three times before the rooster crowed.
That denial is one of the most gut-wrenching moments in the Gospels. After Jesus was arrested, Peter followed at a distance and was recognized by servants in the courtyard. Three times people said, "You were with him," and three times Peter said, "I don't know the man." When the rooster crowed, Peter remembered Jesus' prediction and wept bitterly. It's raw, honest, and painfully human.
But the story didn't end there. After the resurrection, Jesus sought Peter out specifically. In a beautiful scene by the Sea of Galilee, Jesus asked Peter three times, "Do you love me?" — once for each denial. Peter said yes each time, and Jesus told him, "Feed my sheep." It was restoration, not condemnation.
Peter became the leader of the early church. His sermon at Pentecost — where he stood up in front of thousands and preached with power — resulted in about 3,000 people converting in a single day. He performed miracles, opened the door for Gentiles to join the church (through his vision of the sheet and his visit to Cornelius), and wrote two letters that are now part of the New Testament. Tradition says he was crucified in Rome under Nero, reportedly asking to be crucified upside down because he didn't feel worthy to die the same way Jesus did.
