John 3:16

Love
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
— John 3:16 (KJV)

What Does John 3:16 Mean?

This is probably the most famous verse in the entire Bible, and for good reason. It's basically the whole message of Christianity packed into one sentence. God loved people so much that He gave up what was most precious to Him — His own Son — so that anyone who trusts in Him gets to live forever.

What hits different about this verse is the word "whosoever." It doesn't say "whoever is good enough" or "whoever has it all together." It's an open invitation to literally everyone. You don't have to earn it, you just have to believe it.

Sometimes we hear this verse so often that it loses its punch, but think about what it's actually saying: the Creator of the universe looked at broken, messy humanity and decided we were worth the ultimate sacrifice. That's not a distant, detached kind of love — that's an all-in, holding-nothing-back kind of love. And it's offered freely to anyone who wants it.

Context

Jesus spoke these words to Nicodemus, a Pharisee and member of the Jewish ruling council who came to Jesus at night, likely out of fear of being seen with Him.
