Philippians 4:6-7

Peace
"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
— Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)

What Does Philippians 4:6-7 Mean?

"Be careful for nothing" sounds weird until you know that "careful" here means "anxious" or "full of care." Paul is saying: don't be anxious about anything. Instead, take it to God in prayer. Tell Him what you need. And don't forget to be thankful while you're at it.

The result? A peace that "passeth all understanding." That means it doesn't make logical sense. Your circumstances might still be messy. The problem might not be solved yet. But somehow, deep down, you feel okay. That's the kind of peace God gives — not the kind that depends on everything going right, but the kind that holds steady even when nothing makes sense.

And that peace doesn't just float around vaguely — it "keeps" your heart and mind. The word "keep" here has a military flavor, like a guard standing watch. God's peace actually stands guard over your emotions and your thoughts, protecting you from the spiral of worry. You just have to bring your stuff to God honestly and trust Him with it.

Context

Paul wrote to the Philippians from a Roman prison cell, yet the letter is filled with joy and encouragement — making his advice about anxiety all the more credible and powerful.
