Revelation 21:4

Hope
"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away."
— Revelation 21:4 (KJV)

What Does Revelation 21:4 Mean?

This is one of the most beautiful promises in the entire Bible, and it sits near the very end — like God saving the best news for last. A day is coming when God will personally wipe every tear from every eye. Death, sorrow, crying, and pain will simply cease to exist. The old, broken order of things will pass away completely.

The image of God wiping away tears is incredibly intimate. This isn't a distant deity issuing a decree. This is a loving Father bending close, gently wiping the tears off your face. Every tear you've ever cried — from grief, from heartbreak, from frustration, from loneliness — He sees every single one, and He promises a day when they'll all be gone for good.

If you've lost someone, if you're living with chronic pain, if grief feels like a permanent roommate — this verse says it's not permanent. There's an expiration date on suffering. This world as we know it, with all its brokenness and loss, is temporary. What's coming is a reality so good, so complete, that the former things won't even be a memory anymore. That's not wishful thinking. That's a promise from the one who makes all things new.

Context

The apostle John received this vision while exiled on the island of Patmos. Revelation 21 describes the new heaven and new earth — God's ultimate restoration of creation at the end of all things.
