Romans 12:2

Wisdom
"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."
— Romans 12:2 (KJV)

What Does Romans 12:2 Mean?

Paul is drawing a line here between two ways of living: conforming and transforming. Conforming means letting the world around you shape who you are — its values, its priorities, its definition of success. Transforming means letting God reshape you from the inside out, starting with how you think.

The key word is "mind." Paul doesn't say be transformed by changing your behavior or following more rules. He says it starts with your mind — how you think, what you believe, what you value. When your thinking changes, your actions naturally follow. It's an inside-out process, not outside-in.

And the payoff is huge: you get to understand God's will. Not in a mystical, fortune-telling kind of way, but in a real, practical sense. When your mind is being renewed, you start to see things more clearly. You can discern what's good, what's acceptable, and what's perfect. It's like cleaning a foggy windshield — suddenly the road ahead makes a lot more sense.

Context

Paul wrote this to Christians living in Rome, the epicenter of pagan culture and imperial power, urging them to resist cultural assimilation and instead let their faith transform their thinking.
