2 Timothy 1:7
CourageWhat Does 2 Timothy 1:7 Mean?
If you struggle with fear or anxiety, read this verse slowly. Fear is not from God. That's worth repeating. Whatever spirit of fear is whispering in your ear — telling you you're not enough, that everything will fall apart, that you should just give up — that's not from God.
Instead, God gives three things: power, love, and a sound mind. Power to face what's in front of you. Love to stay connected to others instead of withdrawing in fear. And a sound mind — the ability to think clearly and make wise decisions instead of spiraling into panic.
Paul wrote this to Timothy, who was a young pastor dealing with intimidation and self-doubt. Timothy was probably looking at his circumstances and feeling outmatched. And Paul reminded him: the fear you're feeling? That's not your inheritance. God gave you something better. You've got power you haven't tapped into yet, love that casts out fear, and a mind that can handle this. Don't let fear convince you otherwise.
Context
Paul wrote this second letter to his young protege Timothy, who was leading the church in Ephesus. Timothy was reportedly timid by nature, and Paul was encouraging him to lead boldly.
