Isaiah 40:31

Strength
"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."
— Isaiah 40:31 (KJV)

What Does Isaiah 40:31 Mean?

Waiting is hard. Especially when you're tired, when nothing seems to be changing, and when you just want answers now. But this verse promises something incredible to the people who wait on God: renewed strength. Not just enough to get by, but enough to soar like an eagle.

Notice the progression: mount up with wings, run without getting weary, walk without fainting. It goes from extraordinary to ordinary. That's intentional. It's one thing to have a burst of spiritual energy during a mountain-top moment. It's another thing entirely to keep walking faithfully through the mundane, day-after-day routine without burning out. God promises strength for both.

The word "wait" here doesn't mean sitting around passively. In Hebrew, it carries the sense of hoping, expecting, looking eagerly for God to act. It's an active, faith-filled waiting. And the promise is clear: those who do it will find that their strength doesn't run out. When you feel like you're running on empty, this verse says God has a refill waiting for you.

Context

Isaiah wrote this to the Israelites during a period of national discouragement. The people felt forgotten by God, and Isaiah reminded them that God's power never diminishes, even when they feel exhausted.
