Proverbs 18:10

Strength
"The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe."
— Proverbs 18:10 (KJV)

What Does Proverbs 18:10 Mean?

In ancient times, a strong tower was the place you ran to when enemies attacked. It was the safest structure in a city — high walls, solid foundation, hard to breach. This verse says God's name — His character, His reputation, everything He is — functions like that tower for you.

Notice it says the righteous "runneth into it." There's urgency there. When trouble comes, you don't casually stroll toward God — you run. And when you get there, you're safe. Not maybe safe, not sort-of safe. Safe. Period.

There's also something beautiful about the fact that it's God's name that's the tower, not just God in an abstract sense. In Hebrew culture, a name represented everything about a person. So when you call on the name of the Lord, you're invoking His faithfulness, His power, His love, His justice — all of it. It's all available to you in a moment of need. You don't have to build your own fortress. One already exists, and its door is always open to you.

Context

This proverb comes from Solomon's collected wisdom. In the ancient Near East, fortified towers were essential defensive structures, making this metaphor immediately vivid to the original audience.
