Matthew 28:20

"Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen."
— Matthew 28:20 (KJV)

What Does Matthew 28:20 Mean?

These are some of the very last words Jesus spoke before ascending to heaven, and He saved something important for the end: I am with you always. Not sometimes, not when you deserve it, not only on Sundays — always. Even unto the end of the world.

Jesus had just given His disciples the Great Commission — go into all the world, make disciples, baptize, teach. That's a massive, intimidating assignment. And He knew they'd be scared. So the last thing they heard from His mouth was a promise of His permanent presence. It's as if He said: yes, the mission is big, but you're not doing it alone. I'm with you every single step.

This promise extends to you too. Whatever season you're in — starting something new, enduring something hard, just getting through another Tuesday — Jesus says He's with you. Not watching from a distance, but with you. Present tense, always. That little word "alway" covers every moment of every day until the very end. There's no gap in His presence, no moment when you're truly on your own.

Context

Jesus spoke these final words on a mountain in Galilee after His resurrection, commissioning His eleven remaining disciples to spread His teachings to all nations before He ascended to heaven.
