Psalm 37:4

Trust
"Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart."
— Psalm 37:4 (KJV)

What Does Psalm 37:4 Mean?

On the surface, this looks like a blank check — delight in God and He'll give you whatever you want. But it's more nuanced and more beautiful than that. The key is in the order: delight first, desires second.

When you genuinely delight in God — when He becomes your source of joy and satisfaction — something interesting happens to your desires. They start to shift. The things you used to crave don't seem as important anymore. The things God values start to become the things you value. So when He gives you the desires of your heart, those desires have been reshaped by your relationship with Him.

It's not that God is a genie who grants wishes. It's that when you find your deepest happiness in Him, your wants and His plans start to align naturally. You stop chasing empty things and start wanting things that actually fulfill you. And God, who loves to give good gifts, is delighted to pour out those things on someone whose heart is tuned to His. It's a cycle of delight — you delight in Him, and He delights in blessing you.

Context

David wrote this psalm as instruction for believers who were frustrated watching wicked people prosper while they struggled. It encouraged them to focus on God rather than envying the ungodly.
